Second   Lesson

          The   left   half   of   the letter He’, a quarter-
circle    clipped    at    the   right   by   a   vertical   line,
yields    the    next    letter    of    the    ’Alef-Bet.   The
quarter-circle    is    a   hook   (Wau)   on   a   tent-pole
(‘Amud    from    ‘Amad    "to   stand")   for   fastening
canvas    or    curtains.    This   word   current   among
tent-dwellers   is   frequently   mentioned in the book
of   Exodus,   especially when describing the tent in
which   the   box   with the two stone tablets of the
contract   of   YaHUH   (’Aron   Berit   YaHUH) was
kept.    Here    the    tent-poles   were   made   out   of
acacia   (Shittim)   wood,   and the hooks (Wauwim)
out    of    gold    (Exodus     26,   32�37   et   passim).
The   letter   Wau   like   the   English   "w",   and   the
Latin   "u"   is   to be pronounced with rounded lips
both   as   a   vowel,   and   as   a   semi-consonant. It
occurs already in the Old Hebrew inscription from
the   Sinai,   and   there   rather   has   the shape of a
natural hook formed by the branch of a tree, that
its derivative "Y" has preserved almost unchanged.
