FIFTH   WEEKDAY
Fourth   Lesson

          The   fourth   letter   of   the fifth schoolday is
obtained   from the preceding one by placing a dot
in   its   middle   and   thus   changing   it   into an eye
(‘Ayin).   The letter   ‘Ayin   looks the same already
on   the   Old   Hebrew   inscription   from   the   Sinai
except   for   its vertical position. In the alphabet of
the   early Israelite monarchy the dot was removed
and   the Torah blinded by scratching her eyes out
at   the   same   time when her lips were redesigned
to    read    Samekh    "shut   up!",   so   that   the   dis-
tinguishing    dot    was    no    longer   needed.   These
changes are so radical that they must be deliberate,
and   cannot   be   results   of   a   process   of gradual
evolution.   The   closed   shape   of   the   letter ‘Ayin
expresses    a    more    closed    articulation    with    a
stronger    glottal    stop    than    that    of    the   open
letter   ’Alef.   From the shapes of these letters one
may   also   gather   that ‘Ayin, like Tet and Kof, is
pronounced   as   if saying "o" or "u". In the Latin
and   Greek   alphabet   the   letter   ‘Ayin became O.
