SIXTH   WEEKDAY
First   Lesson

          The first letter of the sixth schoolday results
from   the   letter   ’Alef   by adding a vertical stroke
in   the   middle of the upper semicircle. The lower
semicircle   now represents the inside of the thighs,
while   the   stroke marks the outside of the female
sexual   organs   (Kus) or a lady's Kos "cup, vessel
or receptacle". By erasing all or half of the lower
semicircle   the   legs   may   be omitted or shown in
profile.    The   letter   is   also   called   Kaf   "spoon",
which   consists of a receptacle with a handle, and
is used for a "hand" with its palm forming a cup.
It occurs already at the beginning of the word KUS
in   the   Old Hebrew inscription on the pedestal of
a   sphinx   from   the   Sinai.   Phonetically   the open
shape   of   the   letter   Kaf   corresponds to its open
pronunciation    as    against   the   closed   shape   and
pronunciation   of the letter Kof. In Jewish-Aramaic
script   the   letter   Kaf was reduced to a semicircle
open   at its side, whereas the Greek "Kappa" and
the Latin K preserved much of the original design.
