SIXTH   WEEKDAY
Second   Lesson

          In   order   to obtain the second letter of the
sixth schoolday, we return once more to the same
quarter-circle,   open   at   the   upper right, as in the
letters   Wau   and   Zayin,   and   this   time   we   add
nothing.   This   is   a   curved   stick   (Lamed), which
served in acient times as a plough-beam (ma-Lmad
ha-Bakar) used by Shamgar when he slew 600 un-
circumcised    Philistines    (Judges   3,   31).   As   one
wrote like a bull ploughs (Boustrophedon) the verb
Lamed   meant   "to   get the bull accustomed to the
plough-beam" as well as "to teach the student how
to   write".   Attached   to   the   plough-beam was the
spade-shaped    ploughshare   (’Et),   after   which   the
pen    (‘Et)   was   named.   The   funnel-shaped point
of   the   pen   or   spade was called nail (Tzipporen)
of   the   finger   (’Etzba‘),   while   writing was called
Charash   "ploughing"   (Jeremiah   17,   1),   just   like
the    written    lines    of   the   ten   "commandments"
(‘Asseret    ha-Devarim    from    Davar    "to   drive")
were    named    the   ten   drifts   or   ploughed   lines.
