SIXTH   WEEKDAY
Third   Lesson

          In   the third lesson of the sixth weekday all
letters   of the original alphabet are known, so that
it   may   be   used   for repetition beginning with the
letter   ’Alef.   The   first   three   letters   of   the sixth
schoolday    yield    the    phrase:    Kaf   Lamed   ’Alef
"Hand, get a stick and practise the letter ’Alef!" or
Kus   Lamed ’Alef "Vessel, get used to the plough-
beam   of   the   bull!". Similarly, the Bible describes
the   strength   and   sexual vigor of a hippopotamus:
"his   tail   straightens   and   grows   big like a cedar-
beam"   (Job   40,   17).   Since   enjoying   the course
is   important   for   motivating   the students, the last
schoolday of the first week is loosened up by the
ambiguous    letter    Kaf   or   Kus.   As   modern   ad-
vertising    employs    sex-appeal    to   promote   sales,
already   more   than   3000   years   ago   it helped to
impress    the    curriculum    of    the   Torah   of   the
’Alef-Bet   upon the students' memory, circumcision
of   the foreskin, too, being frankly dealt with as a
subject   when covering the letters Zayin and Chet.
