Third   Lesson

          If   the two semicircles of the letter Nun are
moved over each other with their ends overlapping
a little or meeting to form a circle it becomes the
next   letter.   This   is   a   front   view   of   both   lips
(Sefatayim)   standing   for a voiceless "s". It occurs
already   at   the   end of the word KUS in the Old
Hebrew   inscription   on   the   pedestal   of   a sphinx
from   the Sinai. The letter Sefatayim "lips" is also
found in ancient south Semitic script, which shows
the    lips    in    a   vertical   instead   of   a   horizontal
position,   and   corresponds   in shape to the ancient
Egyptian   hieroglyph   "r   �   mouth". It fits into the
system   of   the   Torah   of the Alphabet because it
precedes   the   letter   ‘Ayin   "eye",   that may easily
be   derived   from   it,   and   because   the letter Peh
"mouth"   is   only   seen   in   profile in order to dis-
tinguish   both.   When   the ancient Israelite republic
was   abolished   the   letter   Sefatayim   "lips" was re
named   Samekh   "shut   up!",   and   redesigned   with
a   finger   across   the 3 horizontal lines of the lips.
