THIRD   WEEKDAY
Second   Lesson

          In   order   to obtain the second letter of the
third   schoolday,   we   return   to   the same quarter-
circle,   open   at   the   upper   right, as in the letters
Wau   and Zayin, and this time we add underneath
it   at   its   right   end,   and   a little towards the left
two   parallel   vertical   strokes   of   about   the   same
length    that   must   not   cut   it.   The   quarter-circle
now   stands for the left arm bent at a right angle
next   to the left breast, at the end of which there
is   a hand   (Yod)   in   a   grasping   position with its
thumb opposite the other fingers, such as the hand
of   a   potter   working   at his lathe. The letter Yod
with    its   characteristic   hand,   thumb   and   fingers
down,   is   encountered already in the Old Hebrew
inscription    on    a    sphinx    from   the   Sinai   with
the    exception    that    the   upper   arm   is   missing,
while   there   seems   to   be   a stretched out index-
finger   instead.   The   letter   Yod, like its derivative
"I" in Latin, is to be pronounced both as a vowel,
and   as   a   semi-consonant   spelled "Y" in English.
