1.) Question by Dr. Melvin M. Weiner of Newton Centre, Massachusetts,
U. S. A.:
"When I received reprints of AMMM Vol. 2, No. 4 in time for Pessach, I found for
the second time in receiving your reprints that I read the reprint from cover to cover without
removing my coat upon entering my home and finding the reprint in the mail. I look forward
each year to reading your latest material. I have delayed responding to this latest reprint
because I read it through at least four times in order to absorb most of the information and
because I have been spending a good deal of time testing your ideas of the two and three
dimensional structure of the Assereth ha-Devorim. Are there other arrangements possible
that would still preserve your basic ideas?"
Answer: There are, indeed, other possibilities of arranging the 320
letters of the mere (beli-Mah) text of the Ten Commandments on front and reverse of the two
Tablets of the Law. These rejected alternatives are for the
first time being published in the internet on this website as part of the answer, and may help
to understand why the inscription was actually written in 10 boustrophedon columns of 32
letters each. The fact that each tablet consists of 10 by 15 = 150 cubic letter-units results
from the geometry of the Ark of the Covenant and the
decimal subdivision of the cubit (Ammah) into 10 parts known in biblical Hebrew as a Peka.
The thickness of the tablets, being one Peka or letter-unit, results from boustrophedon
writing, if the letter connecting front and reverse is written on top of the tablets.
The first rejected alternative arranges the 320 letters in
32 horizontal lines of 10 letters each, written from right to left. Why 10 vertical columns of
32 letters are to be preferred to 32 horizontal lines of 10 letters is because of the following
reasons:
- The name of the so-called "Ten Commandments",
which in the original Hebrew are never designated as 10 Mitzwot
"commandments", but as the 10 Devarim "words": In Mosaical
Hebrew Davar means each of the 10 "drifts" or lines drawn by the ploughing bull
being "driven" from one end of the field or writing area to the other, and hence is
synonymous with the Greek concept of boustrophedon or alternating writing directions.
- As I discovered, the graphical details of the Tablets of the Law, written boustrophedon
in 10 lines of 32 letters each, are contained in the first chapter of the Sepher Yetzirah, one of
the most ancient sources of Jewish mysticism known as Kabbalah, where the boustrophedon
lines or 10 Devarim are known as the 10 Sephirot. Hence Kabbalah is but a mystification of
the graphical details of the Mosaical Tablets of the Law.
- The Zakhor/Shamor
and Shaker/Shawa divergencies between the Decalogue texts according to Exodus and
Deuteronomy: Only if written in 10 vertical columns, do these diverging letters happen to
stand in the upper left-hand corner on the front of the second tablet, which were obviously
rendered partially illegible by the same scratch.
- The 32 horizontal lines of 10
letters may lead to confusion, unless some sort of pagination is added, whereas no such
problem exists with 10 boustrophedon columns of 32 letters, once the first letter Aleph of the
first word "Anokhi" is found.
The second rejected alternative avoids the possible confusion inherent in
the previous rejected alternative by a horizontal boustrophedon arrangement, and thus has 15
additional connecting letters between the lines on each tablet or 350 instead of 320 letters for
the whole text. The other reasons, however, for rejecting this alternative do remain. After all,
the text on the Tablets of the Law is not called the 32 Devarim, but the 10 Devarim or Ten
Commandments.
