Second   Lesson

          Like   the   first   letter   ’Alef, also Bet as the
second   letter   of   the Torah of the alphabet owes
its   position   at   the   top   of   the writing course of
the    ancient    Israelite   republic   to   its   basic   legal
document,   the   two   stone   tablets   of the contract
hewn   and   written by Mosheh. For the second of
its   ten   lines   (‘Asseret   ha-Devarim   "ten   drifts"),
the    so-called    ten    "commandments",    begins   on
the   reverse   side of the first stone tablet with the
word   BIT   (read   Bayit,   short   Bet,   Greek Beta)
"house".   The   third   line   (Davar) again begins on
the   front   (‘Ever   ’Alef   "face   A")   with the letter
’Alef,    and    the   fourth   line   once   more   on   the
reverse   (‘Ever   Bet   "face   B")   of   the first stone
tablet   with   the   letter Bet. By adding two strokes
to the letter ’Alef it becomes a Bet "house" in cross-
section   with   the   door-opening   on   the   left   side.
The   upper   semicircle   now   stands   for the railing
around   the   flat   roof   of   the house as prescribed
by   the   law   of   the   Torah (Deuteronomy 22, 8).
