FOURTH   WEEKDAY
Third   Lesson

          The   third   letter   of the fourth schoolday is
formed by drawing a circle that is being cut at its
lowest   point   by   a   vertical   line   beginning   in its
center. This is an uncircumcised monkey-tail, after
which   the   letter   is named Kof "monkey". In the
reign   of   King   Shelomoh   (Solomon) the navy of
the   kingdom   of   Israel   imported   monkeys   from
Tartessus   (Tarshish)   in   southern Spain (1. Kings
10, 22). The voyage jointly ventured with the navy
of   the   allied   King   Chiram   of Tyre lasted three
years.   During   this   trip,   hopping   from   island   to
island   and from port to port, the Israelite writing-
course   or Torah of the ’Alef-Bet could be spread
or   even   sold as know-how among the Mediterra-
nean   peoples   who   did   not   know   their   trading-
partners   by   their   own   names Israel or Canaan,
but     called    them    "Phoenicians"    or    "Punians".
The   letter   Kof   like   the   letter Tet is to be pro-
nounced    with    the   mouth   in   an   almost   closed
position   indicated   by   their   closed   circular forms.
