FIFTH   WEEKDAY
First   Lesson

          The   first   letter   of   the   fifth   schoolday   is
formed   by   drawing   two semicircles open at their
bottoms    with   their   sides   touching   one   another.
These are the crests of two waves which, contrary
to   the   hanging semicircles of Shadayim "breasts",
stand for MIM (read Mayim, short Mem) "water".
The letter Mem is at the very beginning of the Old
Hebrew   inscription   from   the   Sinai,   where it has
three crests. It may also be represented in straight
lines   replacing   the semicircles by two right angles
open at their bottoms and pointing upwards. Since
A is at the top of the alphabet because it is the first
letter of the first word ’ANKI "I" of the Torah of
Mosheh from the Sinai, his initial M was placed at
the top of the second half of the alphabet, though
the   twelfth   of   its   22 letters is L, cf. H. Bauer-
P.   Leander,   Historical   Grammar   of   the Hebrew
Language   (German   1922) p. 65. But the letter L
has   to   stay   down   with   its   hieroglyphic mate K
(below   p. 108) at the bottom of the first column.
