HISTORY

          The Old Hebrew inscription on the right and
left side of the pedestal of a sphinx from the Sinai
was   copied   by   H.   Grimme   and   included in his
article    on    the   "Alphabet"   in   the   Encyclopaedia
Judaica of 1928. According to Grimme the 2 lines
of his copy consist of 2 words each, that have been
arranged in 4 lines on the opposite page to be read
from   left   to right. Separating the words according
to Grimme one letter had to be doubled which, in
the   inscription,   serves   as   the   final   letter of the
first   word,   and at the same time as the initial of
the   second.   This   elision   of   double   letters in an
uninterrupted    chain    of   letters   conforms   to   the
orthography of the 2 tablets written by Mosheh in
the   Sinai.   The letter "t" suggested by Grimme at
the end of the line on the right side of the sphinx
was   omitted,   because   the   horizontal   position   of
the preceding letter, which also occurs in a vertical
position   twice   in   the   same text, shows that it is
the   final   letter   on   the   right side making love to
the    initial    letter    on   the   left   side   (hieroglyph).
